Updates for Mosquito Trapping Program Participants from South Kona & Ka'u

Free Mosquito Traps to Ocean View Residents

Free mosquito traps and refills will be distributed to qualifying Ocean View residents on Tuesday, July 12 at the Ocean View Community Center beginning at 6 p.m.

Participants will receive four to five traps per household. Manufactured by Springstar, the Trap N Kill mosquito traps normally retail at Home Depot for $8 per trap and $6 per pack of refills. Four to five traps around the home, and one refill for each trap will provide five months of mosquito control.

Recipients must be low-income and be willing to occasionally monitor the traps through a 20-week time period. After the first 10 weeks, participants will confirm via email or online that they have serviced their traps with the refills provided. Traps will be distributed on a first-come, first served basis. Supply is limited.

In addition to trap distribution, Tuesday’s meeting will include an educational presentation about mosquito abatement methods. Free information packets will also be given out.

This is a pilot program that is being developed by Hawaii Dengue/Zika Awareness in conjunction with Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary, and Hawaii County Councilwoman Maile David. Councilwoman David obtained $5,000 in discretionary funds via the County Council to assist with this pilot program, which aims to create a protocol for future trap distribution programs in Hawaii. Paleaku Peace Gardens is the fiscal non-profit sponsor of the program.

Hawaii Dengue/Zika Awareness is a citizen-led group formed in November 2015 during the dengue fever outbreak on Hawaii Island. The group is also looking for volunteers to participate in the iNaturalist mosquito Identification survey to help determine the locations of aegypti mosquitoes in Ocean View.
